Psychology is the scientific study of how people behave, think and feel. Clinical Psychologists are specialists in applying psychological theories and methods to problems people commonly experience.

Clinical Psychologists help people to find out why they are having difficulties and how these difficulties are maintained. Once the problem has been understood ways can be suggested to help overcome the problem. Clinical Psychologists specialize in working with a particular client group eg adults, young people, people with a learning disability etc. and usually also specialize in the type of therapy they are able to provide e.g. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Family Therapy etc.

Clinical Psychologists can help with a wide range of problems, some of the most common are:
Depression ~ Anxiety and Panic ~ Phobias, obsessions and compulsions ~ Coping with pain and disability ~ Low self esteem ~ Eating problems ~ Chronic fatigue syndrome ~ Post traumatic stress disorder
Visits to a Clinical Psychologist are private and confidential. No person, including family members or employers will have access to anything you say unless at your request. The only exception is if there are immediate fears for your safety or the safety of someone else.

The first appointment is an opportunity to see whether psychological treatment will be helpful to you. The appointment usually lasts for a little over an hour and for those referring themselves, the first half hour of this initial appointment is free of charge. Further appointments last approximately 50 minutes and are arranged on an individual basis.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is based on the fact that our thoughts, beliefs and ideas affect the way we feel and act towards ourselves and others in daily life and that many of our psychological problems are caused and maintained by our own unhelpful beliefs and assumptions about ourselves and others around us. These beliefs and assumptions are learned through our past experience. At the time when we learned them they may have helped us cope with our experiences but now they may no longer be helpful and often hinder our effective functioning.

In CBT the therapist and the client work together to achieve an understanding of:
  • The client’s beliefs and assumptions about themselves, others and the world
  • How these beliefs affect the client’s current behaviors, feelings and daily functioning.
  • The client and the therapist will then work together to identify goals for treatment.
The focus of CBT is mainly on the “here and now” and the aim is to enable the client to generate solutions to their problems that are more helpful than their current ways of coping.
